Peak Water Levels Rise Less Than Mean Sea Level in Tidal Channels Subject to Depth Convergence by Deepening

چکیده

Effects of sea-level rise (SLR) on future peak water levels in tidal deltas and estuaries are largely unknown, despite these areas being densely populated at high risk flooding. While the rates SLR accelerate, many channels simultaneously experience channel deepening for navigation. With globally decreasing sediment supplies, most becoming deeper when rate accelerates sedimentation cannot keep pace with SLR. These factors potentially favor amplification tides thereby increase flood risk, but extent to which they will do so is unknown. Here, we introduce use a validated model an artificially deepened multi-branch delta get mechanistic understanding non-linear SLR-effects levels. Results show that, current bed level be maintained, not par mean sea-level. Thus increases less than what can expected from predictions increase. The reason that causes proportional reduction convergence area. This mechanism reduces amplification. Nevertheless, effects extend far beyond range present-day seasonal variations, low equal levels, while slightly reduces. have consequences only also freshwater availability, navigation ecology.

Delaying future sea-level rise by storing water in Antarctica

Even if greenhouse gas emissions were stopped today, sea level would continue to rise for centuries, with the long-term sea-level commitment of a 2 C warmer world significantly exceeding 2 m. In view of the potential implications for coastal populations and ecosystems worldwide, we investigate, from an ice-dynamic perspective, the possibility of delaying sea-level rise by pumping ocean water on...

Contemporary sea level rise.

Measuring sea level change and understanding its causes has considerably improved in the recent years, essentially because new in situ and remote sensing observations have become available. Here we report on most recent results on contemporary sea level rise. We first present sea level observations from tide gauges over the twentieth century and from satellite altimetry since the early 1990s. W...

Tidal marsh plant responses to elevated CO2 , nitrogen fertilization, and sea level rise.

Elevated CO2 and nitrogen (N) addition directly affect plant productivity and the mechanisms that allow tidal marshes to maintain a constant elevation relative to sea level, but it remains unknown how these global change drivers modify marsh plant response to sea level rise. Here we manipulated factorial combinations of CO2 concentration (two levels), N availability (two levels) and relative se...

Are Long Tide Gauge Records in the Wrong Place to Measure Global Mean Sea Level Rise?

Ocean dynamics, land motion, and changes in Earth’s gravitational and rotational fields cause local sea level change to deviate from the rate of global mean sea level rise. Here we use observations and simulations of spatial structure in sea level change to estimate the likelihood that these processes cause sea level trends in the longest and highest-quality tide gauge records to be systematica...
